DAF Trucks Wins Regional Final of National Apprenticeship Awards 2013

DAF Trucks Limited has been named as the winner in the Large Employer of the Year category in the Thames Valley regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2013 for its National Dealer Apprentice Programme.

DAF Trucks Limited has been named as the winner in the Large Employer of the Year category in the Thames Valley regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2013 for its National Dealer Apprentice Programme.

Established in 1995 the programme has since become the largest in the UK specialising in heavy good vehicle skills. Over 1,000 young people have now completed the three-year course, which combines hands-on workshop training with periods of residential study and practical training at the DAF Trucks Centre of Learning at City of Bristol College.

The National Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the achievements of the country’s most outstanding Apprenticeship employers and their apprentices.  The awards are organised by the National Apprenticeship Service, who received in excess of 1,600 high quality entrants this year.

Winning the Thames Valley regional final means that the DAF Trucks award submission will now undergo further scrutiny by a judging panel which could see the company being represented at the National Apprenticeship Awards finals at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in November.

Mark Howard, NAS Divisional Apprenticeship Director, said: “This year’s awards were an exceptional showcase of the outstanding apprentices and employers we have in our region. Given the high volume and extraordinary calibre of entries we received, those who reached the regional final really are the cream of the crop.

“I’d like to congratulate DAF Trucks for this superb achievement.  They are a shining example of how Apprenticeships can allow employers to grow their own talent, and enable apprentices to build real careers.”

Tony Shepherd, Business Services Manager at DAF Trucks, commented: “Winning this award is a reflection of the great work that goes into the DAF National Dealer Apprentice Programme.  It is particularly rewarding to be recognised this way at a time when we are currently reviewing all aspects of the programme in line with our continuous improvement philosophy.

“Apprentices are training to be highly skilled technicians providing support to our customers right across the national network of 134 DAF dealerships.  Through this programme young people have the chance to gain a wide range of vital skills and can continue their learning by progressing up to Master Technician. Over 25% of all our Master Technicians are ex-apprentices.

“Career progression doesn’t stop there and many apprentices now hold management roles within their dealership. We invest heavily and are fully committed to the Apprentice programme which is key to our future success.”
