DAF strengthens market position

5th February 2014
DAF strengthens market position

DAF Trucks further strengthened its position on the European truck market last year. In the heavy truck segment (16 tonnes+), a market share of 16.2% was achieved, a record in the 85 year history of the company. With a market share of 11.8% (an all time record as well) DAF was also very successful in the light segment (6-16 tonnes).

With a market share of 16.2% in 2013, DAF further strengthened its position in the European* heavy truck market (2012: 16%). In the heavy truck segment DAF is market leader in The Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Lithuania. In Germany, DAF is the largest import brand.

The total market for heavy commercial vehicles in the European Union in 2013 was almost 241,000 units, an increase of about 8% compared to 2012, when almost 222,000 trucks were registered in this segment. DAF expects that the market for heavy trucks in Europe will reach 200,000 to 230,000 vehicles in 2014.

Light segment
In the light segment - in which DAF is active with the LF model - the European truck market increased by 3% to 57,000 units (2012: 55,500). DAF's market share in the 6 to 16 tonnes class increased from 11.4% in 2012 to 11.8% last year. An important contribution to this growth was thanks to the success in Great Britain, where DAF reached a market share of 42% in the LF segment.

Further growth outside the European Union
DAF has strengthened its market position outside the European Union as well. In 2013 the truck manufacturer delivered 9,400 LF, CF and XF vehicles outside the European Union, a 13% increase compared to 2012. With a 16% market share, DAF is the largest European truck manufacturer in the above 16-tonne segment in Taiwan, where incidentally the 2,000th locally assembled CF came off the production line last year. In Russia, DAF is the fastest growing European brand, with 3,900 registrations in 2013. Another important highlight in 2013 was the start of production in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, where in October the first locally built XF105 left the completely new assembly facility.

Euro 6 major theme
"We're very proud to have further strengthened our market position in 2013, in Europe and beyond", said Ron Bonsen, member of the Board of Management of DAF Trucks N.V. and responsible for Marketing & Sales. "There were many highlights in 2013, with the introduction of a completely new range of Euro-6 vehicle as the major theme. We are receiving excellent feedback from our customers, especially in terms of fuel efficiency and driving characteristics. The new Euro 6 LF, CF and XF play an important role in further increasing our success, together with a complete range of services and a professional dealer network."
