DAF Trucks goes for gold at Tip-Ex with John Owen Aggregates

14th May 2015
DAF Trucks goes for gold at Tip-Ex with John Owen Aggregates

DAF Trucks is joining in with John Owen Aggregates’ 50th anniversary celebrations at this year’s Tip-Ex and Tank-Ex in Harrogate. DAF Truck’s stand will proudly display a special gold-coloured Euro-6 ‘Construction’ CF 400 FAD Sleeper-Cab eight-wheeler on loan from the Sheffield-based tipper operator.

Outside the Show Halls, John Owen Aggregates will also be exhibiting a Day Cabbed derivative of DAF Trucks’ Construction CF 400 FAD, again with a 400hp PACCAR MX-11 engine, and part of an initial delivery of three eight-wheelers announced in February. The bulk aggregates specialist now has four more DAF 8x4s due for delivery and has just placed an order for another three.

Also on show – Construction CF 440 FAD Day Cab

DAF Trucks’ CF Construction Show exhibit at Tip-Ex Tank-Ex is a rugged ‘muckaway’ 8x4 rigid benefitting from a straight beam front axle to offer a high ground clearance and approach angle. New for 2015 is a revised front suspension design and optional aluminium air tanks which mean a payload improvement of over 100kg.

The 8x4 tipper chassis specification includes a Euro-6 PACCAR MX-11 at 320kW / 435hp, Boweld steel body, Edbro front-end tipping gear, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, LDWS, MX Engine Brake, side camera system.

The CF’s new Euro-6 FAD chassis arrangement for tipper, hook loader and mixer applications, provides bodybuilders with the ideal platform to install a wide range of ancillary equipment DAF Trucks’ Construction CF range includes dedicated 6x4 and 8x4 models, all with tough, robust chassis for on / off-site operations.

While these heavy-duty chassis may be specified with hub-reduction rear axles, 6x4 and 8x4 models also come with a UK-specific driveline with single-reduction rear axles to ensure maximum payload for the 26- and 32-tonne sectors; axles are mounted on a high articulation, steel-sprung rear bogie, with two 7.1-tonne axles up front on the 8x4 and 8 or 9-tonne options on the 6x4.

The new, lightweight Euro-6, 10.8-litre, MX-11 (as specified by John Owen Aggregates) saves 180kg from its MX-13 stablemate, and, following recent changes to the front suspension, a further saving of over 100kg is made on the 8x4 FAD chassis.

DAF Trucks also offers a ‘haulage’ model with drop beam front axles and front underrun protection. With a 147mm lower mounted cab, improved vision helps drivers in urban environments. The ‘haulage’ model also benefits from the lighter weight 7.1-tonne front axle suspension arrangement.

Both Construction and ‘haulage’ CF 8x4 variants are also ideal for hook loader, tipper-grab and mixer applications, providing bodybuilders with the ideal platform to install a wide range of ancillary equipment.

DAF LF – 7.5- to 18- tonnes GVW

The DAF LF range covers tipper chassis from 7.5- through to 18-tonnes. A dedicated Construction LF 18-tonner features a raised front bumper with ground clearance of 32cm and an approach angle of almost 25 degrees. With the tightest turning circle in this category, and class-leading cab comfort, the LF Construction is equally at home on the highway and the construction site.

Manual or auto?

While a manual box is often preferred for off-road operations, automated transmissions do offer serious benefits for fuel economy and reduced wear-and-tear. DAF now has the answer to concerns from ‘manual’ tipper operators with special on/off road software in its AS Tronic automated gearbox. When engaged, swifter changes are employed to maintain almost continuous traction and, by making gearshifts at a higher engine rpm, DAF offers the driving characteristics of a manual box, but with the productivity advantages of an auto.

Tractors

For some bulk operations, a 44-tonne, six-axle combination is the answer, with DAF offering 6x2 and 6x4 configurations to suit. For bulk tipping work, there’s the FTP 6x2 chassis with 17.5 inch wheels on a mid-lift axle. The FTP can be specified with either the XF or CF cab, with the former providing the ultimate in overnight accommodation, the latter with class-leading payload which, depending on the trailer, can be as high as 30-tonnes. The FTP also benefits from ample chassis space for hydraulic tipping gear and large fuel-tank capacity.
